Introduction to PBIS
Northwest Academy of Health Sciences is working hard to ensure every student feels like part of the community when they enter the building. We believe in teaching the whole child – academic, behavioral, social, and emotional development – by providing a safe learning environment when every student is provided equitable support.
One of our goals this year is to decrease suspension rates through improving student engagement and rewarding/recognizing positive behaviors. Students will be taught expectations and praised for positive choices through a school-wide PBIS system.
Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) incorporates a broad range of systemic and individualized strategies for achieving important social and learning outcomes while preventing problem behavior.
• It is a proactive systems approach to school-wide discipline and is designed to be proactive and responsive to current social and educational challenges.
• It is based on three tiers of prevention:
• It is not a curriculum, discipline package, or product, but a process for individualized and sustained decision making, planning, and problem solving.
